Microsoft Power BI (PBI) is an interactive data visualization software product developed by Microsoft with a primary focus on business intelligence (BI). It is part of the Microsoft Power Platform. Power BI is a collection of software services, apps, and connectors that work together to turn various sources of data into static and interactive data visualizations. Data may be input by reading directly from a database, webpage, PDF, or structured files such as spreadsheets, CSV, XML, JSON, XLSX, and SharePoint .Power BI provides cloud-based BI (business intelligence) services, known as "Power BI Services", along with a desktop-based interface, called "Power BI Desktop". It provides data warehouse capabilities including data preparation, data mining, and interactive dashboards. In March 2016, Microsoft released an additional service called Power BI Embedded on its Azure cloud platform. One main differentiator of the product is the ability to load custom visualizations.

Key components of the Power BI ecosystem are as follows:

Power BI Service 

This is a cloud-based service (SaaS) that lets you use Power BI online. It used to be called Power BI for Office 365, but now it's known as PowerBI.com or just Power BI. 

Power BI Mobile Apps 

These apps are available for Android, iOS, Windows phones, and tablets. They let you view and interact with Power BI reports on your mobile device. 

Power BI Gateway 

Gateways help connect Power BI to external data sources, making it possible to refresh data automatically. In enterprise environments, gateways can also be used with Microsoft Power Automate (formerly called Flows) and PowerApps in Office 365. 

Power BI Embedded 

This allows you to use the Power BI REST API to build dashboards and reports directly into custom applications. This way, both Power BI users and non-users can access these reports. 

Power BI Report Server 

This is a version of Power BI that runs on-premises. Companies that don't want to store their data in the cloud can use this to create and manage reports. 

Power BI Premium 

This is a paid offering that lets you publish reports across an entire company. Users don’t need individual licenses to access reports, which makes it easier to scale and perform better than shared capacity in the Power BI Service. 

Power BI Visuals Marketplace 

This is a place where you can find custom visuals and R-powered visuals to enhance your reports.

Data Handling & Preparation:

Connect to Diverse Sources: Pulls data from Excel, databases, cloud services, and more. Data Transformation (Power Query): Cleans, reshapes, merges, and prepares raw data into a usable format with a user-friendly interface. Data Modelling: Creates relationships between different datasets for comprehensive analysis. DAX (Data Analysis Expressions): Builds complex calculations, custom columns, and measures for in-depth analysis.

Visualization & Analysis:

Interactive Visuals: Makes dynamic charts, graphs, maps, and dashboards that users can filter and Natural Language Q&A: Ask questions about your data using simple English to get quick answers and visuals. Real-Time Analytics: Dashboards can show live data updates for fast insights. Custom Visuals: Adds more power by using R and Python to create visuals. Collaboration & Sharing, Workspaces & Apps: Helps teams organize and share reports and dashboards. Sharing & Collaboration: Lets you add notes and work with others at the same time., Mobile Access: View reports and dashboards anytime using the Power BI Mobile app.

Automation & Integration:

Automatic Data Refresh: Keeps reports current without needing to update them manually. Microsoft Integration: Connects smoothly with Excel, Azure, and other Microsoft tools. In short, Power BI changes raw data into useful insights that help businesses make quicker and smarter decisions.

Building blocks of PowerBI :

The building blocks of Power BI are semantic models and visualizations. Create a semantic model and then use visuals to build a report.

Create a semantic model :

A semantic model consists of all connected data, transformations, relationships, and calculations. To follow the flow of Power BI, you first connect to data, transform data, and create relationships and calculations to create a semantic model. First, connect to as many data sources you need. Then clean and transform the data to your needs, using Power Query Editor. Add relationships between tables and calculations to extend the semantic model. After all of that, now you can create a report.

Create visualizations in a report :

In Power BI Desktop, when you create a visualization (also called visual), you add it to the canvas for a report page. Choose your visualizations to build pages in your report. It's ideal to keep each page simple with related data, so consumers can easily see the insights. Power BI is a low-code solution, which means that you can "drag and drop" data field directly onto the canvas. Power BI will choose a visual for your data field. You can easily change between visuals for the same fields, and add or remove data fields to the visual. One of the most valuable features of Power BI reports is the interactivity between visuals. Consumers can select different data points in the visual and see how that affects the other visuals. Depending on your design, they can also drill through from one visual to more detail or filter based on different fields in the report.

Organize items with workspaces :

Workspaces are the foundation of the Power BI service. When publishing any report, you must choose a workspace. By default, every user has access to My workspace, which is ideal only for testing. When you want to share content with others, always create and use a shared workspace.

Explore sample reports :

If you haven't created are port yet, Power BI offers several sample reports for you to explore. These reports load to My workspace so you can explore privately. You can access sample reports in the Learn section of the navigation pane.

Ina workspace, you can create an app, which provides consumers a simplified interface to access reports and dashboards. In the app configuration, you setup the app, select the content to include (limited to the current workspace), and choose your audience.

Explore template apps :

Template apps allow you to find an existing app that suits your needs and then you connect your data. These apps can be a great way to quickly share insights with minimal effort.
